Every real estate career in New South Wales starts in the same place. The Certificate of Registration. It is the qualification that turns an interest in property into a job you can actually do, working alongside a licensed agent as a Class 3 Assistant Agent.
If you are wondering what it involves and how to get one, here is the plain version: what the certificate is, what it lets you do, how to apply, and how the course fits around your life.
What the Certificate of Registration is
The Certificate of Registration is the entry qualification for real estate in New South Wales. The course is 5 units, recognised by NSW Fair Trading, and it covers the essentials a new assistant agent needs. Once you complete it and register, you hold a Class 3 Assistant Agent registration, which is your licence to start working in the industry under supervision.
It is deliberately the first rung. Short enough to get you working quickly, thorough enough to give you a real footing.
What it lets you do
With your registration in place, you can work as a Class 3 Assistant Agent under the supervision of a licensed agent. That means open homes, supporting listings, handling buyer and tenant enquiries, and learning the trade on real properties with real clients. For a fuller picture of the role, read our guide to what an assistant agent does day to day.
What it does not do is let you operate on your own. That is by design. The supervised start is how you build judgement before you carry the full weight of a licensed role. The difference between the two is worth understanding, and we cover it in our explainer on the certificate of registration versus a licence.
How to apply, step by step
- Enrol in the 5-unit course. Archer Institute delivers the NSW Class 3 Assistant Agent course online and self-paced.
- Work through the units and complete your assessments. Lean on the support team whenever you get stuck.
- Apply to NSW Fair Trading for your Class 3 Assistant Agent registration once the qualification is done.
- Confirm current requirements with NSW Fair Trading, as state rules can change.
Keep the two steps clear in your mind. Archer issues the qualification. NSW Fair Trading issues the registration. You need both.
Studying online and at your own pace
The course is built for people with lives and jobs already on the go. It is fully online and self-paced, so you can study in the evenings, at weekends, or in whatever gaps you have. There is no classroom to attend and no fixed timetable to keep up with. If a unit trips you up, our Australian-based support team is a real person on the phone or email, not a chatbot or a ticket queue, available from enrolment to completion.
Where it leads next
The Certificate of Registration is the start of a clear ladder. Once you have experience and you are ready for more responsibility and income, the next step is the Class 2 Agent Licence, which lets you list and sell in your own right.
